16 Blantyre Road
Lenox, MA 01240
Robert Paterson acquired the estate of 220 acres called "Highlawn" in 1890. He tore down the modest house, keeping the outbuildings. Hence, the Carriage House Stables and Potting Shed date from the late 19th century. Construction began in 1901, at times employing over 300 people on the grounds and buildings. The family used the house for the summer and fall and entertained frequently, as was the fashion in those days. There were garden parties with musicians imported from New York and grand dinner-dances with each party becoming more and more lavish, befitting the "Gilded Age."
Ann Fitzpatrick Brown reopened Blantyre in 1981, after extensive renovation. Beginning in 2000, Ann and the staff of Blantyre planned and worked toward fully winterizing Blantyre. In May, 2005 Blantyre opened its doors for the first time in 25 years as a year round operation, with as well "the potting shed", Blantyre's cozy and intimate spa.
Lenox, Massachusets 01240
Wheatleigh was built in 1893 by Henry H. Cook as a wedding present for his daughter, Georgie.
Henry was a descendant of Captain Thomas Cook, founder of Portsmouth, R.I., and the son of Constant Cook, who helped build the Erie Railroad.
Wheatleigh was designed by the Boston architectural firm of Peabody and Stearns based on a 16th century Florentine palazzo. Many of the materials and over 150 artisans were brought from Italy to accomplish the intricate carvings both interior and exterior. Frederick Law Olmsted was responsible for creating "Wheatleigh Park" on the land surrounding the palazzo. For many years the largest portion of the 380 acres Wheatleigh estate was used as a working farm.
Today, Wheatleigh is privately owned and features one of the best dining rooms on the east coast.
The 19 suites, guest rooms, and baths set a new standard of style and sophistication, exquisitely combining antique and architect designed furnishings with original museum quality contemporary art.
Wheatleigh is a member of the Leading Hotels of the World and is open year-round.
